What Our Students Say

"I tried three schools in Tokyo before finding Sakura. The difference? They explain why Japanese works the way it does — in English. For the first time, grammar actually makes sense."
Thomas K.
VP Operations · European Manufacturer · Tokyo
"My company needed our team JLPT N2 ready for the visa changes. Sakura built a custom programme, and their monthly reports to HR made it easy to track our investment. Three of five passed on the first attempt."
HR Director
Global Financial Services Firm · Tokyo
"The online format is perfect for my schedule — they even accommodate my 22:00 JST sessions, which is a lifesaver. I can reschedule when travel comes up. In six months I went from zero to confidently ordering, navigating, and small-talking with colleagues in Japanese."
Sarah M.

Questions We Hear Often

The indirect method uses your native language — English or Spanish — to explain Japanese grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context. Unlike the "direct method" used by most Tokyo schools (where only Japanese is spoken in class), our approach gives adults a clear, efficient framework for understanding how Japanese works — especially for complex topics like keigo, verb conjugation systems, and sentence structure. Learning through a language you already think in produces faster comprehension and deeper retention.

Absolutely. Our Foundation level is designed specifically for professionals arriving in Tokyo with zero Japanese. Many of our most successful students started from scratch. We'll have you reading hiragana and navigating daily situations within the first month.

Lessons are conducted via Google Meet, 50 minutes each. Your instructor shares materials on screen, uses a digital whiteboard for writing practice, and sends homework and review notes after each session. Most students find online lessons more time-efficient than commuting to a classroom — especially in Tokyo.

We offer sessions from 16:00 to 24:00 JST, Monday through Saturday. Evening and late-night slots (including 21:00 and 22:00 starts) are popular with working professionals. You can change your regular time slot with 24 hours' notice at no charge.

From zero, reaching N2 typically requires 1,000–1,200 hours of study. With two 50-minute lessons per week plus self-study, most dedicated students reach N2 in 2.5–3 years. With our Intensive plan (3–4 sessions/week), this timeline can be compressed to under 2 years. We create a realistic timeline during your assessment and track progress against it.

Please notify us at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations made within 24 hours of the lesson will result in the deduction of one lesson credit.

Yes, light homework helps reinforce what you learn in class. Don't worry — we keep it manageable and practical.

Textbooks are not included in the course fee. The required materials depend on the course type:

  • Group Classes & Private Lessons — We use Genki I and Genki II. Students are asked to purchase the textbook(s) themselves.
  • JLPT Preparation Classes — Textbooks vary depending on the student's level (N5–N2). Students will purchase the recommended materials individually.
  • Travel Japanese Courses — All learning materials are provided by Sakura Japanese Workshop. No textbook purchase is required.

Details of the required textbooks will be shared after enrolment or during the initial consultation.

You may discontinue the program at any time once your purchased lesson credits have been used. Unused credits are non-refundable. In addition, any remaining credits will expire if the account has not been used for 3 consecutive months from the date of the last lesson.

Now enrolling — starts 14 May
Beginner 2 · Chapters 4–6

You move beyond textbook Japanese and start speaking naturally. Speak casually with friends, express opinions, quote others, and describe people and situations in detail.

Beginner 4 · Chapters 10–12

Nuance & Experience

Your Japanese becomes more expressive and personal. Compare options, talk about past experiences, explain situations, and give advice — reaching JLPT N5 level.

You want structured, weekly progress toward JLPT N5
You can commit to one Tuesday evening per week for 10 weeks
Already have some Japanese? Our Private Lesson program offers a fully personalised curriculum at your exact level.

Questions About the Group Course

This course is designed for absolute beginners — people with zero or near-zero Japanese. If you have studied Japanese before, please contact us first so we can advise whether this course is the right fit, or whether a Private Lesson would suit you better.

We understand that life gets busy. If you miss a lesson, we will share the Google Meet recording so you can catch up at your own pace. While attending live is always the best way to practice, the recording ensures you never fall behind.

Group lessons run on a fixed schedule and cannot be individually rescheduled or substituted with a make-up session. The fixed rhythm is what keeps the group progressing together — and missed lessons are covered by the session recording shared after each class.

A minimum of 5 participants is required for the course to run. If this number is not reached, the course will be cancelled and a full 100% refund will be issued immediately. We will notify you as early as possible if this situation arises.

If you need to cancel your enrolment:

  • 7+ days before the first lesson: 100% refund
  • 3–6 days before the first lesson: 50% refund
  • 2 days or less before the first lesson: No refund

Please purchase the following before the first lesson (3rd Edition):

  • Genki I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese (Textbook)
  • Genki I: Workbook (used mainly for homework)

Both are available on Amazon Japan and major bookstores in Tokyo.

Yes — light homework using the Genki I Workbook helps reinforce what you learn in class. We keep it manageable and practical so it fits into a working professional's week.

Yes. After completing Beginner 1, you can continue to Beginner 2 (Genki I, Chapters 4–6). The full Genki I curriculum is covered across four terms, progressively building toward JLPT N5 level. Details for upcoming terms will be shared at the end of each course.

In Japan, trust comes before logic. If you don't know that rule, you'll keep hitting the same wall — no matter how strong your ROI looks on paper.

You had the numbers.
You had the logic.
They still said no.

Have you ever worked with a Japanese partner and wondered why the decision-making process takes so long? Or why everyone stays silent in the meeting room, even when you've presented something compelling?

"We have a sophisticated logic. The ROI is clear. The functionality is strong. Why aren't they accepting it?"

"Your counterpart smiled and nodded throughout the meeting. Two weeks later, you received a polite decline."

"They said they would 'consider it.' That was a month ago. You don't know whether to push, wait, or walk away."

"You thought the relationship was solid. Then you found out they signed with someone else."

There's a reason. And if you don't know the Japanese business logic, you'll keep hitting the same wall.

Global Standard
Logic First
Strong numbers → trust follows.
ROI is the entry gate.
Japanese Business Logic
Trust First
Without a personal relationship,
you can't reach the entry gate.

Building trust first isn't optional — it's the must-do step before anything else happens. This is where most European executives get stuck. And this is exactly what we solve.

Six capabilities.
One durable foundation.

By the end of the program, you will have built a broadly applicable foundation in Japanese business culture, decision-making, and communication dynamics — calibrated to your specific professional context.

1

Japanese Business Ethics

The key do's and don'ts that determine trust and credibility in professional settings — including what signals competence and what loses relationships without warning.

2

Decision-Making Intelligence

Structural insight into Ringi and Nemawashi — why decisions take the time they do, who the real decision-makers are, and how to read progress accurately.

3

Cross-Cultural Agility

A comparative map of Japanese business norms against Western, Middle Eastern, and Chinese approaches — where differences are structural and where common ground exists.

4

Hierarchy & Unwritten Rules

How to navigate seniority, build relationships at the right level, and avoid missteps that are rarely communicated directly.

5

Communication Decoding

How to interpret silence, indirect language, and the true message behind formal responses — including the six key signals from "Kento shimasu" to "Muzukashii desu ne."

6

Risk & Opportunity Framework

A framework for identifying risks and opportunities in Japanese business relationships — particularly in situations that require change, negotiation, or a shift in direction.

"Logic first, trust follows" vs "Trust first, logic within."
Understanding this one difference changes everything.

One Objective. Your Engagement.

Each session is calibrated to your specific professional context, ensuring that every concept is immediately applicable to your day-to-day interactions with Japanese stakeholders, industries, and organisations.

The 7 sessions below are an example. Your actual program is designed around your goals.

The program begins not with a lecture, but with a strategic conversation. We align on your stakeholder landscape, identify where the real friction lies, and design every subsequent session around your specific context — not a generic profile.

The moment you walk into a Japanese business setting, signals are already being read. This session covers the protocols, rituals, and social dynamics of the first encounter — and how to make them work in your favour before the business conversation begins.

Japanese professional relationships are governed by an implicit value system that is rarely explained and almost never stated directly. This session decodes what earns trust, what quietly destroys it, and how to meet expectations that no one will tell you exist.

The meeting you attend is rarely where the decision happens. This session gives you a structural map of how decisions are actually made in Japanese organisations — and a practical framework for reading where you stand at any given moment in the process.

In Japan, the real conversation rarely happens in the meeting room. This session covers the social settings where trust is actually built — and how to navigate them with the confidence of someone who understands what is happening beneath the surface.

For executives who operate across multiple markets, the challenge is not just understanding Japan — it's managing the transition between Japan and every other cultural context in the same working week. This session builds that agility.

The final session integrates everything into applied practice. We cover the communication rhythms that sustain Japanese relationships over time, how to manage change without losing momentum — and close with a structured simulation of a real scenario from your context, followed by a personal action plan.

This program is designed for you if…

✓ This is for you

  • You engage regularly with Japanese organisations and need to build a durable, broadly applicable foundation
  • You are responsible for partnership development, sales, negotiations, or relationship management with Japanese companies
  • You've hit a wall with Japanese counterparts and want to understand the structural reason — and how to break through it
  • You operate across multiple cultural contexts and need to manage the transition to Japan with confidence

✗ This is not for you

  • You are traveling to Japan for personal or tourism purposes
  • You are primarily looking to learn to read or write Japanese
  • You are not in a role that involves Japanese counterparts, clients, or partners

Kenya Irie

I spent years working in international marketing in New Zealand and Denmark — sitting exactly where you are now, trying to navigate the gap between global business logic and Japanese business culture. I know what it feels like to present a strong case and hear nothing back.

After returning to Japan and working inside Japanese organisations, I understood what was really happening on the other side of the table. That experience — of having lived and worked on both sides — is what makes Sakura's approach different from any Japan expert who has only ever known one world.

Through Sakura Japanese Workshop, I support executives who are serious about Japan. Not just culturally curious — but strategically committed to making it work. Every program is built around your deal, your partners, and your timeline.

Born in The Hague.
Now Serving Tokyo.

Sakura Japanese Workshop was founded in The Hague, Netherlands, with a clear mission: to provide structured, English-guided Japanese education tailored to working professionals.

Our founder, Kenya Irie, is a Globis MBA graduate who has lived and worked in Auckland, Copenhagen, and Tokyo. This global experience shapes every lesson — combining practical language skills with the cultural intelligence that matters in real business settings.

What started as private lessons for diplomats and executives in The Hague has grown into a programme serving professionals from over 25 nationalities. Our students include global business leaders, university professors, embassy staff, and entrepreneurs across Europe.

We specialise in the indirect method — teaching Japanese through English, Spanish, or French — because we believe adults learn faster when grammar is explained in a language they already think in. Every programme is built around defined objectives: professional communication, JLPT certification, relocation preparation, or long-term linguistic development.

Now, we bring that same proven methodology to executives and expatriates living in Tokyo — fully online, fully flexible, fully committed to your success.
